The summer is here and with it comes a whole range of productions emerging in our incredible locations. In this article, we recall what we at Merton Film Office, managed by The Film Office, have welcomed into the borough so far this year. Check out the best parts below!
One Day
Netflix drama mini-series ‘One Day’ comes to be the latest rendition of the novel written by David Nicholls of the same name, following the previous 2011 film adaptation. This beautiful and heart-wrenching story follows two characters: Dexter Mathew and Emma Morley meeting at their 1988 university graduation. Over the course of 20 years, the protagonists begin to lead different lives from who they thought they’d become. However, unable to forget that special night when they first met, an interesting relationship develops between them.
This production took to the streets with some scenes taking place on Erridge Road – a lovely residential area. Look out for when the characters are talking inside the bus! It was filmed from the pavement on a crane with traffic management making sure everything on the road went running smoothly and safely. We will no doubt be seeing more of rising star Leo Woodall & Ambika Mod in future – dare we mention Bridget Jones in ear shot of Leo…

3 Body Problem
From the creators of Game of Thrones, Netflix sci-fi drama series ‘3 Body Problem’ was taking the internet by storm earlier this year with its release in March, based off the ‘Remembrances of Earth’s Past’ novel series written by New York Times Bestseller author Liu Cixin. Set mainly in the UK and China, many scientists begin taking their own lives whilst a nanotechnology expert starts having haunting visions of a countdown after coming into contact with an extraterrestrial civilisation. The show is packed with so many mysteries that will keep your mind going the entire time!
Merton hosted the production in the borough for some street filming scenes just next to Wimbledon Park – one of them being of a character looking out of their window as a car pulls up outside, requiring 100+ crew for just 2 cast members! In addition, 2 cranes were needed for lighting the scene. Another was some drone footage of the street from an aerial view at night. Jacob Hughes-Rodgers, the Film Officer who worked on the job commented “Merton’s residential streets offer a variety of different aesthetics from period terraced houses to large detached properties and we were delighted that the production chose the borough to film in, basing themselves out of a key hero location for a number of days in 2022. Filming in residential areas comes with a variety of challenges but with the right planning, preparation and consultation we were pleased to see the filming go without a hitch!”

Screwfix
Screwfix came to Merton for their latest advertising campaign involving dancing tradespeople and popular influencer Spudman! The commercial spotlights how much faster click and collect is after customers check-in on the app as they arrive at the store, informing the staff so they can get their order ready for them as they walk in.
The parts involving this borough comprised of the tradespeople leaving the property, getting into the van and driving off down the street in a rapid sequence of shots. The street in question was Vectis Road!
